Defensive Driving Requirements
Determining your eligibility for an Alaska DMV Approved program can be difficult. After you receive a moving traffic violation, notice a great amount of points on your driving record, or see a hike in your auto insurance, you'll want to do whatever you can to make sure your driving record is clear and your insurance is low.
If you need to take defensive driving for a traffic citation, you may take the course with court permission at any time. The defensive driving requirements for ticket dismissal will be determined by the judge due to your particular circumstances and your driving history. For certain motorists, if you have a minor traffic violation and do not have a large amount of points on your driving record or do not receive citations often, you may be allowed to call the court and request driver improvement. Other violators may be required to attend court on their assigned court date. Here, you will have to be granted to partake in a defensive driving program. When requesting authorization to take defensive driving, be sure to specify that you are looking to take the program for full ticket dismissal and not just the standard two-point reduction!
If you are taking the course for a two-point credit, you are able to take the course once every 12 months if you do not have a commercial driver's license. However, there are exceptions to these rules. You will need to contact the Alaska DMV to confirm that you meet their defensive driving requirements in order to remove two points from your driving record. If you are a holder of a commercial driver's license, you have 30 days to notify your employer that you received a traffic violation. If you received your citation out of the State of Alaska, you also have 30 days to notify the DMV.
If you would like to take the course solely for a reduction on your auto insurance, you will need to speak with your auto insurance provider. They will be able to tell you if you are qualified for a discount by taking defensive driving.
